Registered Osteopath Hilary Callaghan

What can I expect on my first visit?

Firstly a full case history is taken of presenting symptoms as well as any relevant past medical history.

Then a postural assessment is made, usually with the patient standing. Treatment is then performed to relieve the symptoms and prevent them reoccurring. Treatment involves soft tissue massage, articulation of joints, mobilisation and manipulation. Dry needling and ultra sound may also be used. Advice on management and future prevention is also given to maintain the effects of treatment.

What should I wear?

To assess posture fully, the patient is usually asked to undress down to underwear. If this is a problem, just mention it during the consultation. Some patients may feel more comfortable bringing in cycling shorts.

Do I need a Doctor's referral?

No. However if you are are using health insurance to pay for treatment please check with them first as some do require a doctor's referral.

Does my health insurance cover Osteopathic treatment?

Yes but levels of cover vary with different policies. Some require a doctor's referral and some require you to pay an excess. Please check with your insurer before treatment.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a manual therapy aimed at improving and maintaining the function of the body as a whole. Frequently we develop symptoms in one part of the body due to an imbalance elsewhere. Osteopathy addresses this using soft tissue massage, articulation of joints, mobilisation and manipulation. Dry needling and ultra sound may also be used if necessary.

Osteopathy is also beneficial for management of stress, helping the body to cope better in stressful times.
